  Kenni Burns (Minnesota running backs coach) takes over at Kent St for Sean Lewis, who joined Neon Deion's staff at Colorado. He was also at W.Michigan with Fleck so he's familiar with the MAC.

    Eric Morris (Washington State OC) takes over at North Texas and has plenty of experience as an assistant coach in the state of Texas, including at Houston (2010-11), Texas Tech (2013-17) and Incarnate Word (2018-21).

   Lance Taylor (Louisville OC) takes over at W.Michigan.

Guidry spent the 2022 season at Marshall and took the Tulane job last month. Tulane is owed $500,000 in buyout money for Guidry's departure, and the payment is due to the school in the next 60 days

Non- power confernce teams circling the top 25

 I reviewed some of the major polls and stories and added some comments. Football has most of my attention, but I'm slowly shifting into hoops gear.

AAC: Houston plays good D, which borders on mugging, and this may affect them this season depending on how closely the referees call the games. However, Bama went small ball and handed the Cougars their first loss. Memphis(8-3) Coach Penny recruits well.

MWC: San Diego State  (8-3) New Mexico (10-0); Utah State( 9-0) UNLV  10-0. Conference play will change some of this attention

WCC: Gonzaga(8-3) Saint Mary's (9-3). I added Santa Clara(9-3) because they upgraded their OOC schedule.

CAA: College of Charleston (11-1) I guess they're got a mention because they beat Virginia Tech.

I peeked at the Atlantic Sun and was surprised to see Liberty and Jacksonville off to slow starts. Also, Queens University Royals(9-2), a small private school in Charlotte who moved up from DII, is off to a nice start but isn't eligible for post season play until the 2026-27 season.

Gonzaga was in top form in a 100-90 win over Bama(SEC), and San Francisco handed UNLV (MWC) its first loss in a decent day for the WCC.

Kinyon Hodges scored 22 points and Caleb Donaldson added 16 for the Eastern Illinois Panthers in a 92-83 upset of Iowa(Big 10). EIU (Ohio Valley) is 4-9 in OOC play, which includes blowout losses to Ohio St and Illinois of the Big 10.

No. 11 Gonzaga beat Montana for its 72nd straight home win.

Coach Ladner has S.Miss (11-2) fans feeling good with the additions of Mercer big man Felipe Haase, and Ol Miss transfer, Austin Crowley, but one of those two losses was to NW St.  The SunBelt season is about to get in gear so we'll see if the Golden Eagles' talk about Dancing has staying power.

New Mexico (14-0 2-0 MWC) nipped Wyoming 76-75 last night. Coach Pitino Jr is on a roll. Jamal Mashburn Jr, who followed his coach from Minnesota to UNM, scored 20 for the Lobos. His dad Jamal played at UK for Pitino Sr.

MLK day was a busy with hoops, and I watched a little of  Florida Atlantic(17-1, 7-0 CUSA) road win over WKU when I got home from work. Boyd led the Owls with 16 points. They've stuck with HC Dusty May, and it appears to be working.

Charleston (19-1,7-0 CAA) handled William & Mary easily.

Hawai'i (14-4, 5-1Big West) are off to a decent start. Bernardo da Silva had an interesting stat line (PTS11, REB 12, Blocks 3) in the Rainbows win over Cal St Northridge.

It doesn't take long to come back to reality in the MAC. Kent State(16-3 6-0MAC) 86 Ball State (13-6 4-2MAC) 65. I tuned into the game early but didn't stay. Toledo handled Buffalo in other MAC action.

Some Horizon news: Detroit Mercy's Antoine Davis scored 42 in a win over UIPUI and  is No. 2 on NCAA D-I scoring list with 3274 points, but he'll need a big finish this season to catch Pistol Pete(3667). They are 3.5 GB of Milwaukee and N. Kentucky in the conference.

Florida Atlantic(19-1, 9-0 CUSA) remains hot with a 67-59 win over UTEP. Their only loss this season is to Ole Miss (SEC).

Cal Baptist rolled Tarleton in WAC play, and Andrew Taylor led Marshall to a SunBelt win over Ark St.

Cincy D at least tried, the O vanished in Fenway. LOU 24 Cincy 7.  Fresno rolled Wazzo 29-6. Cougars were awful. I got those two wrong, but was correct on USM who road 329 yards rushing from Gore Jr to beat Rice 38-24.

 Pro Football Hall of Famer Charley Trippi.  a Heisman Trophy runner-up at Georgia who later led the Chicago Cardinals to the franchise's most recent NFL championship in 1947, died Oct. 19, 2022 at the age of 100. He was the son of a Pennsylvania coal miner and received a scholarship to play for the Bulldogs through his connections to a Coke bottler, who was a Georgia alumnus in nearby Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

Since Kingsbury is on the hot seat in Arizona, Sean Payton's name has popped up in the rumor mill as a replacement. He was a ball boy for the St Louis Cardinals when their training camp was held at Eastern Illinois in the 1980s

Does anyone recall Johnny Roland, who played college football at Missouri and for a few seasons with the Cards. He went on to various stints as an NFL running backs coach, including coaching Emmitt Smith when he played for the Cardinals.

During the Cardinals' 28 years in St. Louis, they advanced to the playoffs four times (1964, 1974, 1975, and 1982), and never hosted a playoff game. Their only postseason win came over Green Bay in the 1964 Playoff Bowl or Runner up Bowl played at the Orange Bowl in Miami a week after the championship game.  Browns blanked the Colts 27-0 in the 1964 title game.

BTW, Racine, WI was the original home of the Cardinals.

In 1964, the Bidwills were disappointed with the progress of the new downtown stadium in St Louis and considered moving the Cardinals(NFL) to Atlanta but didn't. Years later the St Louis Hawks(NBA) moved to Atlanta.

In 1967, Charley Johnson, the Cards starting QB, was summoned to active duty in the Army which opened the door opened the door for Jim Hart, an undrafted free agent out of Southern Illinois University.

In September of 1920, Paddy Driscoll signed with the Racine Cardinals, and he became head coach and quarterback. He led them through three decent seasons before focusing exclusively on being their QB. He played college ball at Northwestern.

It gets goofier.  The team played on Racine Avenue in Chicago and was renamed the "Chicago Cardinals" in 1922 after a team from Racine, Wisconsin (the Horlick-Racine Legion) entered the league. That season the team the Cards moved to Comiskey Park.

Shifting to the baseball Cards.  I came across the name Brooks Lawrence, while reading about the 1957 baseball season. Cards gave up on him quickly after he went 15-6 in 1954 and traded him to Cincy. He went 19-10 in 1956 for the Reds and there's been chatter, pro and con, that his MGR Birdie Tebbets sandbagged him from getting his 20th win because he was black. However, he finished his playing career with Cincy in 1960 and later worked for the Reds in scouting, minor league player development, and also radio and television.

 Just cuz I like talking sports history. Here's another San Fran college Kid. Ollie Matson(Chicago Cardinals (1952–1958) and later with the Rams, Lions and Eagles. When he retired in 1966, his 12,799 career all-purpose yards were second only to Jim Brown.

He was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1972. I have a faint recall of my uncles chatting about him often during Sunday afternoon family beer parties.

Roger Wehrli began his NFL career in 1969 after playing at Mizzou. NFL Draft1969 / Round: 1 / Pick: 19. He had 40 interceptions in his career and inducted into the HoF in 2007. 

Roger Staubach claimed that Wehrli is where the term “shutdown corner” originated.

Also recall he was solid punt returner.

Reading Jim Bottomley's(Cardinals) bio. Hornsby, player/MGR, and Branch Rickey bickering all season, but rolled the dice on aging Grover Cleveland Alexander who the Cubs didn't want anymore. GCA was 39 and liked his booze.

He won two games in the 1926 World Series and closed up GM 7 in relief while Babe Ruth(Yanks) was thrown out trying to steal second.

I finished the book on Sunny Bottomley(1B). Impressive RBI(1422) total and batting AVG(.310). Low on HRs(219). Solid fielding 1B. My vote=NO to HoF.

I can see why it took so long for him to make the HoF. In the early 1970s there were plenty of other shaky inductees.

North Texas fired coach Seth Littrell on Sunday, two days after the they lost in the CUSA championship game. He was 44-44 in seven seasons. 

Alex Golesh ( Tennessee offensive coordinator) takes over at USF, and Tim Beck (NC State OC) takes over at CCU.

I'm a bit stunned Cincinnati hired Louisville’s Scott Satterfield to be its next coach, and  coincidentally the Cards  will face Cincinnati  in the Fenway Bowl.

 AAC: Tulane visits Cincy to determine who hosts the title game next week against UCF if they beat USF. Bearcats have re-grouped since a loss to UCF three weeks ago. Tulane lost to UCF two weeks ago and crushed SMU last week. Bearcats nip the Green Wave 24-23.

CUSA: WKU will win at FAU and stay in contention with North Texas for a chance at the CUSA title game against UTSA. Austin Reed will toss three TD passes. WKU 31 FAU 23

Correct: UTSA jumped out to a big lead early and never looked back in a 41-7 win. USA withstood a mild late threat from USM, and holy sh^t I guessed the correct final score.

Wrong:  ECU got crushed 42-3 by Houston. The E stands for erratic. Wyoming went up 10-0. but Boise worked its way back slowly and won 20-17.

I saw the name Earl Weaver, the name of late Orioles baseball manager, and did a double take while reading the Chicago St basketball box score. This Weaver scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds in a 55-53 loss to Minnesota of the Big 10. Chicago St has improved but won't survive as an Independent

The school can barely sustain its hoops 1A program after parting ways with the WAC and could not find a conference in the Midwest to join. Since some may view this as a quirky blog: Chicago St(10-18) hosts Hartford(5-22) in hoops today.  Cougars won at Hartford on Feb 4. I think some Independents in football played home/away series in pigskin during one of the Covid seasons. Hartford is dropping to a lower division so this may be the last of this matchup. Chicago St is talking of adding football which is crazy. School needs to join the Summit conference and calm down.

Kind of getting a chuckle from all the twitter kids promoting UConn to B12. UConn showed that re-connecting with the Big East and focusing on hoops and the northeast was the correct call. If it needs a conference for football, try the MAC. I never understood why it didn't remain in the AAC for football only like Navy does.

Chicago St remains a mystery, and there must be something amiss if the MEAC, a 1a hoops conference of schools with a majority of black students, nixed inviting Chicago St to join it. Possibly it was due to east coast schools not wanting to increase travel costs.

UMass guys in the NFL. I thought Isabella(Bills) might have staying power in the NFL, but did not see Merriweather(Saints) who carried the ball 150 times for 575 yards for the Minutemen in 2022, possibly making the NFL.

No invite to the Horizon for Chicago St hoops, but they secured commitments from Matt and Ryan Bewley, 5* recruits.

Virginia canceled its game against Coastal Carolina this coming weekend after 3 football players  were killed earlier this week in an on campus shooting.

And some Baltimore -related news. Charlotte has hired Michigan associate head coach Biff Poggi as its next HC 

Poggi was a longtime successful high school coach in Baltimore ,Maryland with  Gilman School and  then powerhouse, St. Frances Academy, before joining Jim Harbaugh's staff at Michigan. He  sent  Blake Corum and other St Frances stars to Michigan.

SunBelt: Coastal Carolina and Troy are each 4-1 and lead their respective divisions. Troy Trojans will march into ULL and come out with a 17-14 win with the help of a pick6.

Two for four yesterday and 3-2 for the weekend. I laid an egg with Rice who fell to Charlotte 56-23. Reynolds tossed 5 Td passes for the 9ers. EMU led Toledo until the fourth quarter and lost 27-24.

UCF jumped out to a 10-0 led but then Cincy woke up in the second quarter, but UCF hung on for a 25-21 win. DQ James rushed for 174 for Wyoming in a 27-20 win.

It's getting crowded at the top of the AAC.

Week 8 O5 conference play

 AAC: I'll roll with Tyjae Spears(500 rushing yards, 8TDs) and the Green Wave(6-1, 3-0) in a close home win over Memphis. TUL 27 Mem 24

CUSA: It's hard to ignore Harris tossing for 2300 yards and 15 TDs so I like UTSA at home. UTSA 31 NTX 23

MAC: Most of the MAC has beaten up on each other while Toledo and Buffalo are each 3-0 in conference play. Buffalo wins at home. BUFF 20 TOL 19

MWC: Air Force host Boise St, and I think Roberts has a big game running the ball at home. AFA 38 BSU 35

SunBelt: I visit the Hampton Roads/Virginia Beach area once or twice a year and bet Virginians are wondering how JMU and ODU are getting all the sports ink. AAC nabbed my attention this week. Ahlers, the ECU QB, led ECU to a convincing 34-13 win over UCF, and Cincy had to stop a two -point conversion attempt by SMU for a 29-27 win.  UCF and Cincy need more work for they join the Big 12.

Week 7 O5 conference play

 AAC: Navy is averaging 237 yards on the ground this season and scored 52 against Tulsa last week, but may not score enough to stay with high-scoring, low-winning SMU.  SMU 40 Navy 38.

CUSA: It's the battle of the Owls. Rice is having a decent season while FAU 's only win is against a 1AA team. Rice 27 FAU 24

MAC: I'll go with BGSU (M. McDonald 106-190, 1218 YDS, 14 TD, 2 INT) over Miami(Ohio) in a nailbiter. Bowling Green 24 Miami O 23

MWC: Nevada hasn't won since beating TX St in week 1, and Hawaii gave San Diego St a good game before losing by 2 points. HAW 20 Nev 19

MAC: E.Michigan beat Arizona St but struggled to victory of UMass and W. Michigan has been dull. I want to call this one a tie, but EMU will pull out a 17-16 win.

SunBelt:  The Stun Belt has lost some of its shock appeal, but James Madison, the new 1A kid in town,  won at Appy, so I think Centeio and the Dukes pull out a 23 -19 squeaker at Ark St this week.

I was wrong on the passing Rebs. SJST 40 UNLV 7. Cordeiro, the SJST QB, threw for two TDs and ran for two TDs. 

 Tune woke up late for Houston and they outscored Memphis. 26-12 in the 4th for a 33-32 W.

I finished 3-2.  I was wrong on ECU who couldn't figure out Tulane's D. UTSA won a shootout over WKU. I was correct on EMU and JMU but guessing they would be low scoring games was off by a mile.

Surprises. Appy lost to TX ST. NIU  keeps losing, yesterday it was 52-32 to Toledo.

Week 5 OOC with a dash of military style

 Navy(AAC) travels to Colorado to face Air Force(MWC). Navy beat ECU last week for its first win, but I don't they have enough offense to keep up with the AFA ground force led by Brad Roberts. AFA 31 Navy 23

Army(1-2) hosts Georgia St(0-4) this week in a series that started in 2019 and is tied at 1-1. Both teams have scored a lot of point this season but this one will be low scoring. Army 17 GA St(SunBelt) 16

MTSU, who is coming off a big win over Miami(FLA), hosts UTSA in a CUSA matchup that will likely feature an aerial show MTSU C. Cunningham (85-120, 1000 YDS, 7 TD, 3 INT) /UTSA F. Harris (104-154, 1310 YDS, 10 TD, 2 INT). MTSU 34 UTSA 31

I'm sure both Ohio and Kent St  are glad that P5 part of their schedules is in the rear-view mirror. I'll roll with K. Rourke (102-147, 1195 YDS, 9 TD, 2 INT) to lead the Bobcats to victory in a MAC matchup. Ohio 30 Kent St 20

1-3 this week

Military defenses played better than I expected in the AFA 13 Navy 10 game. However, Army 's D couldn't stop T. Gregg (16 car, 124 yds, 1TD) GA ST 31 Army 14.

Harris threw for 414 yards and two TDs for UTSA in a 45-30 win over MTSU

Cooper rushed for 240 yards and Cephas caught 13 passes for 246 yards for Kent St in a 31-24 win over Ohio.

CUSA notes: Reed threw for 406 yards and 3 TDs but it wasn't enough to get WKU to a win over Troy. Troy 34 WKU 27.  How about some Rice news. Rice 28 UAB 24. The Owls stats weren't big, but Ari Broussard ran for two touchdowns, and Treshawn Chamberlain scored on a fumble return.

Week 4: O5 OOC 4-Pack

 Once upon a time Houston(AAC) and Rice(CUSA) were SWC members. Houston will get a much needed win but it won't be easy. McCaffrey will catch a lot of passes for the Owls, but it won't be enough. HOU 31 Rice 26.

Both QBs have decent numbers in the North Texas(CUSA)/Memphis(AAC) matchup, but Aune won't outduel Henigan. MEM 34 UNT 23

Both teams are off to rocky starts.  D. Finn will have a solid game carrying the ball for Toledo, but the Aztecs outkick them at home. SDST(MWC) 15 TOL(MAC) 13

I'm not seeing USM pulling a  Stunbelt-style upset against the surprising Green Wave(AAC) who are coming off a 17-10 win over Kansas St (Big12). Neither team has a player with incredible numbers. Perhaps a pick 6 turns the game around. TUL 19 USM 16.

I got darn close on picking the final score correctly on the SDST 17 Toledo 14

Zach Wilcke threw a pair of touchdown passes, and the USM D got a pick 6 in a 27-24 win over Tulane. I was correct on a pick 6 but wrong about which team got that and a win.

3-1 for the week.

App St got a taste of its own "stun" medicine and lost to James Madison, a new SunBelt member.

Week 3 O5: Hot or not

 I can't ignore three hot SunBelt schools, App St, Marshall, and Georgia Southern, this week. I think the trio may come out of the gate slow but get in gear by the second quarter of their respective games.

App St will get a big game out of running back C Peoples in a 30-19 home conference win over Troy.

Marshall will ride freshman phenom K. Laborn to a 31-16 win at Bowling Green(MAC).

Georgia Southern will have to slow down C Brown to pull out a close road win. GS 24 UAB(CUSA) 22

Air Force has relied on a strong running attack to get off to a 2-0 start but face a tough conference road game at Wyoming. Peasley will throw 3 TDS for the Cowboys and hand AFA a 27-24 loss.

The "Stun" belt had a few holes poked in it this weekend, on OOC play with Marshall falling in OT to BG and Georgia Southern getting handled by UAB which made me 2-2 in my picks. Laborn's fumble out of the end zone for a touchback was a killer for Marshall.

In other OOC play USA was held scoreless in the fourth quarter in a one-point loss to UCLA, Ark St fell to Memphis, ODU fell to UVA, SMU lost to MD, and ULL lost to Rice.

Yes, I'm 63 and miss the ACC

 Terps were a solid ACC team the last time they faced SMU, who was in the SWC, in football. Terps won  7-0 in 1961 and 14-6 in 1962 to lead the series 2-0. SMU was coached by Bill Meek in 1961 and Hayden Fry in 1962. Terps were coached by Tom Nugent both seasons. The 1961 Terps beat Penn St which remains a big deal in this part of the USA.

I'm looking for MD(B10) to eke out a home win 20-19 with a solid game from Baby Tua against SMU(AAC).

15 penalties but the Terps persevered to take a 3-0 series lead over SMU. Thanks, Roman Hemby 16 carries, 151 yards, 1TD in a 34-27 win.

Georgia Tech is a mess with blowout losses to Clemson (41-10) and OL Miss (42-0) this season.

Wake Forest survived Liberty 37-36 when the Flames didn't convert a two pointer.

Cuse edged Purdue but the jury remains out on the Carriers.

Boeheim usually gets on my nerves but I'm with him on the Big Ten, which finished 9-9 in the 2022 Dance. The ACC finished 14-5 and sent three teams to the Elite Eight.

"At the end of the day, you play for the [NCAA] tournament," Boeheim said Friday at his team's media day. "You can say what you want about the Big Ten. They sucked in the tournament.

It's good to see the Terps continue to schedule games against other Maryland 1A schools. They beat Coppin St(MEAC) yesterday, a small inner-city school in Baltimore City. Juan Dixon, one of the key members of the Terps 2001-02 title team, is HC of Coppin St.

BTW, MD hosts UCLA this season. I recall when Lefty Driesell got a little ahead of himself calling MD the UCLA of the East in the 1970s.

UCLA kicked our butt from beginning to end last night in hoops. UCLA 87 MD 60. Hope we get it together before UCLA joins the Big 10. Cal Board of Regents got $$$ concessions and OK'd the UCLA move.

What a wacky world! Gary Hahn, the NC St radio announcer since 1991, was suspended for saying this while relaying the score of the Sun Bowl, "down among all the illegal aliens in El Paso, it's UCLA 14 and Pittsburgh 6.". 

BTW, Pitt(ACC) beat UCLA 37-35 in game of scoring streaks in which it also rained at times while the sun was shining brightly. Sun Bowl has been a constant must -see TV game for me since I was a kid, and is now one of the few bowl games not televised by ESPN. It's on CBS.

UNC gets a big win over UVA to keep its Dance chances alive. FSU upsets Miami. And it still feels weird to type Pitt may be the best team in ACC. Panthers crushed Cuse, and it sure appears Boeheim won't be able to cry his way into the Dance.

My Terps play Northwestern in a battle for second place in the Big 10. No one saw that coming during Xmas season.

Louisville (2-16) upset an erratic Clemson squad to get it's second ACC win.

RIP, Terry Holland , the hoops coach at UVA. Some great battles on and off the court between Terry and and Lefty(MD). Lefty nearly got Moses Malone(Petersburg VA) ,but Moses joined the ABA. Terry got Ralph Sampson from Harrisonburg, VA.

RIP: Denny Crum. Great college coach for Louisville. He was an assistant for Wooden at UCLA.

The two Louisville national titles in 1980 and 1986 came when the Cards were in the Metro Conference. Kenny Payne, the current Cards HC played on the 1986 team.

Terps were down 14-0 to UVA in a renewal of former ACC regional rivalry and came back to win 42-14. The matchup was usually played on the final regular season Saturday. Next year the game will be at UVA.

UCF(AAC) is favored against Louisville(ACC) who lost to Cuse so I'm shifting gears looking for close games or upsets.

UTSA(CUSA) 27 @Army 23.  Roadrunners have a long road trip, but they but they took Houston to 3OT before losing last week.  

Toledo(MAC) 26 UMass 17. Minutemen won shatter any records at the Glass Bowl, but they'll hang around.

UTEP(CUSA) 20 New Mexico St 19. in a border war at the Sun Bowl. Tyrin Smith will get 100 receiving yards for the Miners.

Liberty 19 UAB(CUSA) 17. Coach Freeze will pull out a home field W.

I tip my hat to Marshall(SunBelt), but they won't last long against an angry Notre Dame squad.

 I thought the Cougars would find enough O to get by ECU so-so D. Ahlers rushed for two TDs for ECU in a 27-24 win over BYU.

BTW, Ahlers reminds me a little of Bobby Douglas, a former Kansas QB who played for the Chicago Bears in the 1970s

 Ain't no way Leach let's Memphis(AAC) hang around too long. It's time for him to prove he was a good hire for Miss St(SEC). Dawgs return 16 starters. Miss St 30 Memphis 22.

Miami-Ohio(MAC) will give UK (SEC) a tough first half, but Levis will get the Wildcats in gear in the second half. UK  37 M-O 19

Kent St flashes some O but will fall on the road at UW(Pac12)  UW 23 Kent 20

Chase Brice  will get Appy(SunBelt) an upset win in week 1 at UNC(ACC). APP 26 UNC 25

And UCLA will get by Bowling Green behind veteran QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson. UCLA 30 BG 20 BTW, Bowling Green will be the first team from the MAC to play in the Rose Bowl, and it's also their first-ever matchup.

I'm keep my eyes on Butch Jones who recruited well for Ark St, and Terry Bowden should get more out of ULM this season.

It's difficult to not pick App St, but a healthy McCall will keep CCU in the East race all season. #herd could do some stomping if they get the QB situation resolved.

 I forgot about this: Texas St HC Spavital made headlines in 2021 when he went with an all-transfer portal approach in recruiting. Bobcats went from two to four wins and haven't had a winning season since 2014.

Two MAC/Sun Belt Conference games will be televised by the NFL Network in 2022.

Eastern Michigan Eagles of the MAC will travel to take on the ULL Ragin’ Cajuns of the Sun Belt on Saturday, Sept. 10. Series history is 1-1.

Sept. 17, the Bowling Green Falcons of the MAC will host the Marshall Thundering Herd of the Sun Belt. BG has won 21 of 29 games again the #herd

AAC 2022 football hunches

 While the big AAC debate appears to be about the Cincy and Houston, the two teams, headed to the Big 12 in 2023, I want to give a shout out to Jamie Romo, an Annapolis, MD kid playing OL for Navy. His grandfather, Leon "Red" Romo, played football at LSU.

I'm giving Cincy proper respect for winning the AAC title and cracking the F4 ceiling last season, and it gets a big test in its opener @ Arkansas(SEC). Unfortunately, Cincy will not face Holgorsen's Cougars in the regular season. Houston's toughest OOC game is @ Texas Tech(BIG12) on Sept. 10.

SMU and Memphis could get in the mix since each has a gunslinger to apply the offensive pressure. Tanner Merdecai for the Mustangs and Seth Henigan for the Tigers could be difference makers.

Gerry Bohanon, an ex-starting QB at Baylor, has not locked up the QB1 job at USF, and remains in a battle with Timmy McClain.

Guz Malzahn named John Rhys Plumlee, a transfer from Ol Miss, the starting quarterback at UCF. He beat out Mikey Keene, who played last year amid Dillon Gabriel’s injury.

Dallas/Ft worth area got hit with 9.19 inches of rain in a 24-hour period this week, and now only a small patch of turf remains above water on SMU's football field at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.
