Yes, I'm 63 and miss the ACC

Terps were a solid ACC team the last time they faced SMU, who was in the SWC, in football. Terps won  7-0 in 1961 and 14-6 in 1962 to lead the series 2-0. SMU was coached by Bill Meek in 1961 and Hayden Fry in 1962. Terps were coached by Tom Nugent both seasons. The 1961 Terps beat Penn St which remains a big deal in this part of the USA.
I'm looking for MD(B10) to eke out a home win 20-19 with a solid game from Baby Tua against SMU(AAC).

Sept 18, 2022
15 penalties but the Terps persevered to take a 3-0 series lead over SMU. Thanks, Roman Hemby 16 carries, 151 yards, 1TD in a 34-27 win.
Georgia Tech is a mess with blowout losses to Clemson (41-10) and OL Miss (42-0) this season.
Wake Forest survived Liberty 37-36 when the Flames didn't convert a two pointer.
Cuse edged Purdue but the jury remains out on the Carriers.
Oct 15, 2022
Boeheim usually gets on my nerves but I'm with him on the Big Ten, which finished 9-9 in the 2022 Dance. The ACC finished 14-5 and sent three teams to the Elite Eight.
"At the end of the day, you play for the [NCAA] tournament," Boeheim said Friday at his team's media day. "You can say what you want about the Big Ten. They sucked in the tournament.

It's good to see the Terps continue to schedule games against other Maryland 1A schools. They beat Coppin St(MEAC) yesterday, a small inner-city school in Baltimore City. Juan Dixon, one of the key members of the Terps 2001-02 title team, is HC of Coppin St.

BTW, MD hosts UCLA this season. I recall when Lefty Driesell got a little ahead of himself calling MD the UCLA of the East in the 1970s.
Dec 9, 2022
It feels weird to type: Friday, Dec. 30
Duke's Mayo Bowl: Maryland(Big10) vs. NC State(ACC)
Bank of America Stadium (Charlotte, North Carolina)
Someone waking up from a nine-year coma thinks why are two ACC teams matched up in a Bowl Game?
I'll stick with my Terps who showed me something in a loss to Ohio St. Baby Tua has been solid. MD 24 NC St 20
Dec 15, 2022
UCLA kicked our butt from beginning to end last night in hoops. UCLA 87 MD 60. Hope we get it together before UCLA joins the Big 10. Cal Board of Regents got $$$ concessions and OK'd the UCLA move.
Dec 31, 2022
What a wacky world! Gary Hahn, the NC St radio announcer since 1991, was suspended for saying this while relaying the score of the Sun Bowl, "down among all the illegal aliens in El Paso, it's UCLA 14 and Pittsburgh 6.".
BTW, Pitt(ACC) beat UCLA 37-35 in game of scoring streaks in which it also rained at times while the sun was shining brightly. Sun Bowl has been a constant must -see TV game for me since I was a kid, and is now one of the few bowl games not televised by ESPN. It's on CBS.
Now back to the NC St game. Terps 16 Wolfpack 12
Jan 29, 2023

Yep, a Terps hoops conference win over Nebraska and being respectful about RIP Billy Packer are sure signs times have changed. BP was such a Tobacco Road (UNC, Duke, Wake Forest, & NC St) homer, I'd mute the TV on regional ACC telecasts.
Feb 26, 2023
UNC gets a big win over UVA to keep its Dance chances alive. FSU upsets Miami. And it still feels weird to type Pitt may be the best team in ACC. Panthers crushed Cuse, and it sure appears Boeheim won't be able to cry his way into the Dance.
My Terps play Northwestern in a battle for second place in the Big 10. No one saw that coming during Xmas season.
Feb 27, 2023
Terps crushed NW and are two GB of Purdue in the B10.
Louisville (2-16) upset an erratic Clemson squad to get it's second ACC win.
RIP, Terry Holland , the hoops coach at UVA. Some great battles on and off the court between Terry and and Lefty(MD). Lefty nearly got Moses Malone(Petersburg VA) ,but Moses joined the ABA. Terry got Ralph Sampson from Harrisonburg, VA.
May 10, 2023
RIP: Denny Crum. Great college coach for Louisville. He was an assistant for Wooden at UCLA.
The two Louisville national titles in 1980 and 1986 came when the Cards were in the Metro Conference. Kenny Payne, the current Cards HC played on the 1986 team.
Sept 1, 2023
Rare for this Terps' fan to concur with UNC bosses on Tobacco Road, but I do on NO to expanding the ACC into a transcontinental conference. It won't improve anything.
Sept 16, 2023
Terps were down 14-0 to UVA in a renewal of former ACC regional rivalry and came back to win 42-14. The matchup was usually played on the final regular season Saturday. Next year the game will be at UVA.
Dec 7, 2023
SMU, a future ACC team. barely misses being in a NY6 bowl and ends up in the Fenway Bowl playing BC. It feels weird to type that in an ACC blog.
Jan 30, 2024
I'm unsure why the ACC takes so many algorithmic hits. Right now, it appears UNC, Duke, and UVA, would make the dance. FSU, Wake Forest, and Miami(FLA) are being ignored.

RIP Lefty Driesell- rarely a dull moment

Fast and furious P5 coaching moves

Big 10: I guess it was the $$$ that motivated Kevin Willard to exit Seton Hall(BigEast) after 12 years and join the Terps. He'll certainly give Rutgers a recruiting battle in the NY/NJ corridor. BTW, Seton Hall is focused on Saint Peter's coach Shaheen Holloway.

SEC: I'm still shaking my head over Miss St signing Jans away from New Mexico St because he's mostly a West Coast guy except for one season at Ball St. And, I also don't get Missouri hiring Cleveland State coach Dennis Gates. FLA hired Golden from San Francisco when White took the UGA job.
South Carolina is set to hire Chattanooga's Lamont Paris, who's last three seasons have been solid. LSU hired Murray State's Matt McMahon who showed he could win after Ja Morant went to the NBA.

ACC: Louisville hired Kenny Payne, who was on Denny Crum's 1986 Cards title team, and has been assistant at UK and with the NY Knicks.

Big 12: Kansas St hired Baylor assistant Jerome Tang
March 26, 2022
Frank Martin , a part of the Bobby Huggins coaching tree, is the new HC at UMass(Atlantic 10). It's his first HC gig in a non power 5 conference after HC stops at Kansas St(B12) and South Carolina(SEC). A10 is a solid hoops conference and usually gets two or three dance tickets.
Steve Prohm, who left Murray St for Iowa St in 2015 and was out of coaching last  season, returns to Murray St(OVC).
March 31, 2022
Lamont Paris had a nice run the last two seasons with Chattanooga(Southern), but I'm not sold on that being enough to the HC at South Carolina(SEC).
As expected, Holloway left St Peters for Seton Hall(Big East).
Archie Miller gets the job at Rhode Island(A10) one year after getting canned at Indiana. The matchups with Dayton , where he was HC from 2011-17 will be interesting.
April 1, 2022
Miami(FLA) is losing Asst Coach Chris Caputo who will be the new HC at GW(A10). He has strong recruiting ties to the talent-rich  D.C., area which was a key factor  in the success of both Miami(ACC) and George Mason's(A10) programs.
Butler fired HC LaVall Jordan after five seasons, and Ohio(MAC) HC Jeff Boals is considered  a leading candidate, but they may need to look around at some top assistants on other Big East teams.
April 4, 2022
I thought Matta was older than 54 and didn't see this was coming. Butler hires Thad Matta, ex-Ohio State. He was an associate athletic director for basketball at Indiana for the past year.
April 20, 2022
Greg Oden and Jon Diebler, both former Ohio State players under coach Thad Matta, are joining Matta’s Butler staff at Butler.
June 28. 2022
The Big 12 is targeting Brett Yormark, the current COO of Jay-Z's Roc Nation and also a former CEO with the Nets (NBA), to be its next Commissioner. I thought they'd at least look for a football guy.
July 3, 2022
BTW,  Yormark and Calipari are longtime buds. That's a high level of slick.
July 24, 2022
GG Jackson, the No. 1 prospect in 2023 who had committed to North Carolina, will reclassify and join South Carolina this season. Quite a steal for HC Lamont Paris.
Dec 15, 2022
I'm moving like a snail toward some O5 hoops blogs. I watched some of the WKU/Louisville game last night and thought the Hilltoppers would keep Louisville Coach Kenny in pain, but the Cards prevailed. Jamrion Sharp, the 7'5 WKU center, is quite sight on the court.
Jan 5, 2023
Perhaps Georgetown should've made a move. Big East is big time hoops. Georgetown's woes under sixth-year coach Patrick Ewing hit a new milestone yesterday with its 25th consecutive Big East loss, surpassing DePaul's previous record during the 2010-11 season. The stretch goes back to March 2, 2021 against Xavier, the team's last regular-season league win.
Jan 27, 2023
Reviewing some of the moves in my initial post. Big 73-55 win for the Terps over Wisky last night.

Tang has been superb for KSt.

As far as the SEC hires. FLA and Mizzou are doing Ok.

Payne remains in pain at Louisville (ACC).
Feb 5, 2023
Willard is starting to make me a believer. Terps crushed Minnesota and are shopping for sneakers to wear to the Dance.
I've been wondering if Huggy should retire and then this:  Erik Stevenson scored 34 points in a West Virginia 93-61 rout of Oklahoma 93-61.
Feb 6, 2023
Buckeyes lost to Mich and fell behind Nebraska, who beat Penn St.

Ohio State 3-9
Minnesota 1-11

Nebraska should keep Hoiberg, but the Buckeyes may not have much patience with Holtman.
Feb 12, 2023
I was looking at the Big 10 and Big 12 scores yesterday and Indiana eked out a win over Mich, while the Terps got a big won over Penn St. It sure looks like we're heading for another Dance selection that gives the B10 too many teams.

B12 is nuts. KSt looked like they made the HC hire of the year with Tang, but now it just appears to be a decent hire. They fell to 7-5 in b12 play after cellar dweller Texas tech knocked them off yesterday. And OK is sliding fast. It's HC may need to call the nuns of Loyola of Chicago and ask for some prayers.
Feb 17, 2023
Texas hurried up to fire Beard because he "engaged in unacceptable behavior that makes him unfit to serve as head coach at our university."

Felony charge against former Texas coach Chris Beard dropped two months following arrest. Will a Power conference hire him in the off-season? I think so and it will be funny if its the SEC, where Texas is headed.
March 9, 2023
Looking back to the last spring hires.

SEC: Miss St and Mizzou hires appear to be OK, but some of the other not so much, particularly Paris at S. Carolina. Gamecocks lost to cellar dweller Ole Miss in rd1 of the SECT. It appears Chris Beard will be the Rebels next HC and won't that be interesting when TX plays Ole Miss in SEC action.

ACC: Adrian Autry, a Syracuse alum, will replace Boeheim who is retiring after 47 years as the Cuse HC. He!! of a career for JB but he got on my nerves 90% of the time.
Payne has delivered pain for the Louisville fans.

Big East: GTown has no choices but to axe Ewing after another horrible season. Thad Matta's return to coaching has been unimpressive for Butler U fans.

Big 10: Willard has taken the Terps on a roller coaster ride this season. We'll get to the Dance but that's about it.

Big 12: I thought Huggy would start considering retirement, but West Virginia has perked up and could be on the bubble. They beat Texas Tech in rd1 of the B12T. TT and Coach Adams parted ways cuz of the Bible incident, and AD Holcutt could be heading for the exit.

Pac 12: Cal (3-29) has to be swinging the axe on Marx Fox.

SEC Six Big12 Four in hoops challenge 012922 and onward

How has Bama lost a game? Impressive win over Baylor. The Iron Bowl (ALA/AUB) is a big deal in hoops, too
Sooners' coach Moser may ask the nuns of Loyola-Chicago to pray for him.
You never know which LSU, Miss St, and OK St squads will show up.
TX HC Beard wins the "Barnes bowl", and his former team Texas Tech hasn't missed a beat since he left.
Calipari is back and Huggy(WV) is fading, despite giving Musselman's Razorbacks a battle.
More Self-analysis for the Jayhawks.

Since the B12 has four less teams than the SEC, Vandy beat Georgia were left out of yesterday events b
The Buzz has faded @ TAMU who lost to South Carolina.  I shook my head when the Ags hired Buzz Williams away from VTech a few years ago.
Feb 1, 2022
After Saturday games I thought Baylor would crush West Virginia, but Huggy's guys lost the lead after Taz Sherman(29 points) left the game due to a concussion.  BAY 81 WV 77.
Damion Baugh(20 PTS, 8 REB, 1 AST) helped TCU pull away from the Sooners late. TCU 72  OK 63. Two teams headed in different directions.
Feb 2, 2022
"Iron Bowl" hoops started with some poor shooting and the refs swallowing their whistles for both sides, but Auburn played some D and pulled away late in the first half. AUB 100 Bama 81
Elsewhere in the SEC: Tennessee bounced back with a win over TAMU, and Ol Miss beat slumping LSU. Miss St got a much needed win, beating the Gamecocks 78-64.

In Big 12 action Texas Tech shaved the Beard in Austin. TT 77 TX 64, while Kansas bounced back well from the loss to Kentucky by beating Iowa St 70-61 despite a solid night for Izaiah Brockington(ISU - G  24 PTS, 8 REB, 3 AST)
Feb 3, 2022
He!! of an effort from Scotty Pippen Jr.(VAN - G  33 PTS, 6 REB, 5 AS), but UK hung on . UK 77 VAN 70.
Nijel Pack (KSU - G 22 PTS, 3 REB, 2 AST) was a key factor in the Wildcats win over OK St in this bubble matchup. K St 71 OK St 68
Feb 6, 2022
What a difference a week makes? Bama lost to UK and Baylor lost by a ton to Kansas. Auburn barely beat cellar dweller GA. LSU lost to Vandy again. Is Stackhouse's crew going to make a run?
Feb 8, 2022
I couldn't keep my eyes open for the second half of TX win over Kansas. Nice move by Beard early in the game to feed the big men down low. Timmy Allen TEX - F
24 PTS, 9 REB, 1 AST
Feb 9, 2022
Arkansas won its 9th straight game, a huge OT win over Auburn last night.
Feb 10, 2022
Gibson scores 30 as Oklahoma(14-10, 4-7 CONF) upsets No. 9 Texas Tech 70-55. I'm sure Sooners' fans are still wondering about hiring Porter Moser from Loyola of Chicago as they remain on the bubble.
Feb 16, 2022
Vols are on a nice roll in February. Big upset of Kentucky last night.
Ol Miss crumble continues with L to South Carolina.
Beard shaved off a two-point OT win in a Red River battle. TX 80 OK 78
Feb 23, 2022
Scotty's kid nearly rolled the Tide last night. Pippen Jr. VANDY 26 PTS 2 REB 6 AST. Ark beat FLA.  Moser continues to struggle at OK.  TT 66 OK 42
Feb 28, 2022
After what I saw yesterday in B10 action, the conference may be fifth among the power 5 conferences. I loved Ayala leading the Terps to a 75-60 win over the Buckeyes and was laughing at Nebraska killing PennSt a few days after Nebraska(8-21, 2-16) said they were keeping Coach Holberg. Every season the B10 gets more than their share of Dance tickets.
Illinois beat Michigan and Indiana beat Minnesota.
March 2, 2022
Two in a row for Nebraska. NEB 78 Ohio St 70. Plus, Wisky beat Purdue in B10 action.  In the B12 TCU knocked off Kansas.
March 3, 2022
Terps win again. This time it was Minnesota. I suspect Danny Manning wants the interim term removed. Manning's replacement at Wake Forest, Steve Forbes, has the Deacons in gear for the ACCT. They crushed NC St last night.
March 6, 2022
Another wild Saturday. SEC : LSU  beats Bama. Tenn  cools off Arkansas. TAMU beat Miss St and may have crept onto the bubble. That's what I get for criticizing Buzzcut.
Big 12:  OK St edged TT. Huggy's guys climb out of the cellar and beat Jamie Dixon's TCU squad. It takes me back to the Big East WVA/Pitt matchups when Dixon was the Pitt HC.
ACC: UNC spoils Coach K's day. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. BTW, it's difficult for me to root for any Tobacco Road team.
March 7, 2022
I noticed that Nebraska won again which hurt  Wisky. Funny how that vote of confidence for Hoiberg has sparked the Huskers.
March 10, 2022
Wake Forest loss to BC in the ACCT probably nixes its Dance chances. Deacons needed to win at least one game. Is Huggy going to stir the Big 12 pot. WV beat KST. Cuse  beat FSU by 39. Is Boeheim  going to be crying for another ticket? I suspect losing his son Buddy for one game for the punch will hurt him today against Duke.
March 13, 2022
Vols/Ags in the SECT final. Then VA Tech jumped off the bubble beating Duke in the ACCT. This will reverberate through the Dance committee this afternoon.
Plus, I hope they don't do their annual normal and selecting too many Big 10 teams.
March 21, 2022
Three ACC teams, Miami, UNC, and Duke, in the Sweet 16. Laranaga still has some magic left  from from 2006 when he took GW (Colonial, at the time) to to the F4.
March 25, 2022
''40 Minutes of Hell,'' returned for Arkansas in the win over the Zags . I have them in the F4. I had Texas Tech in the F4 but they lost to Duke. Also have Nova in the F4. The damn Auburn pick to win it all haunts me.
March 27,2022
Duke moves on to P4. I'm on the anybody but Duke train which may mean rooting for UNC. Tobacco road choices are so difficult for a life-long Terps' fan.
April 3, 2022
LSU has no scholarship player remaining from its 2021/22 team.
Aug 12, 2022
St Peters upsets still haunts. I love a Cats-fight . Stoops/Calipari
# 4straightpostseasonwins.  UK's football program winning the Citrus Bowl in 2018, Belk Bowl in 2019, Gator Bowl in 2020 and Citrus Bowl again in 2021. What is also highlights is how UK's basketball program hasn't won a postseason game since 2019, most recently losing to Saint Peter's in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament after going 9-16 in the 2020-21 season and missing the 2021 NCAA Tournament.

DI Baseball peek in April 2024
