Herd beat WV. Maryland chatter: After losing 15 consecutive games to MD, UMBC(AEC) finally beat the Terps.

SBC: UL edged Marshall 1-0. Morgan pitched 8 strong innings and the Cajuns got the only run on a fielder's choice. Ga Southern upset CCU.

AFA(MWC) beat Dallas Baptist(CUSA) for its first win over a ranked team since 4/19/22.

 Catching Carolinas: ECU beat W&M. CCU beat UNC. T. Thach (HR, 2rbi) for UNCW in a win over Wake Forest. 

Citadel lost to the Gamecocks. Charlotte lost to Clemson.

In AAC action ECU blanked Memphis 14-0. SIU 3 INS 2 in a mild MVC upset. Vallee(SIU) went 2-4 to lift his AVG to .348.

Non p-5 baseball tournament time in 2023

 A ton of activity yesterday in the tournaments so I'll focus on the surprises and spankings.

A10: St Louis 23 St Joseph's 8. The Billikens are 2-0 and face Richmond next.

AAC: ECU lost to USF but bounced back to beat Cincy,

CUSA: Dallas Baptist beat Rice 13-2 and faces WKU today.

Summit: S. Dakota St beat N Dakota St 17-3 and faces Oral Roberts next.

SunBelt: Some tough wins and more battles to come. USM beat JMU 7-1 and faces Troy, a winner over Appy, next.  CCU edged GA St and faces ULL, a winner over TX St, next.

Elimination phase is nearly over. Since I spent a few months in the area in 2005, I'm paying attention to UNC Greensboro, which is located in an old section of the city. If UNCG beats Samford in the first game, they face Wooford later in the day for the SoCon title. Kennedy Jones leads the Spartans with .357 AVG, 14 HR, 42RBI 

 Nichols and New Orleans play today for the Southland title. Tulane is still alive in the AACT.

Sunbelt: Cajuns take 2 from CCU to make it the conference final against USM. Is the SunBelt going to get three tickets?

AAC: Tulane makes it to final against ECU.

CUSA: Charlotte faces DBAP

Colonial:: Winner of Elon/Northeastern takes on UNCW in the final. 

Horizon: Wright St won two games over Oakland yesterday by scores of 9-8 and 14-0 to get the AQ for the 3rd year in a row.

Southland : Nichols beat New Orleans to get the AQ.

Tulane's defeat of ECU probably threw a wrench into teams like ULL, who lost to USM in the SunBelt final, getting at an at-large. Teo Banks (Tulane) hit three home runs and 11 RBI on his way to the MoP of the AACT. 

ECU and CCU had great regular seasons and I'll be shocked if they 're not in field of 64. 

Charlotte beat DBAP to win the CUSAT. UNCW beat Samford to win the CAA.

Well, the selection committee shut my mouth. Sunbelt got more tickets than the Big 10.

Sun Belt 4 (Coastal Carolina, Louisiana, Southern Miss., Troy)

Big Ten 3 (Indiana, Iowa, Maryland)

And the cold states did better than I guessed.

American 2 (East Carolina, Tulane)

Plus, they treated the CUSA right

One more baseball comment before football takes control.  UC Irvine outfielder Caden Kendle, who agreed to a $175,000 bonus with the Cardinals as a 10th-rounder but later backed out of the deal, was the only player taken in the first ten rounds to not turn pro.

On 08/18/23, Nolan Schanuel was selected to the Angels' major league roster directly from AA, only 40 days after he was drafted from FAU(then CUSA).

CCU(SunBelt) is 23-11 and its team batting average is .318

Campbell (Big South) is 30-8:  Bryce Arnold, a SS, leads the teams win Home Runs with 14.

Elon (Colonial) is 24-14.  took down # 2 Wake Forest(ACC).

Rough night for most of the teams I listed. Wake Forest rolled CCU 11-1. Duke edged Campbell 4-2. ECU lost to NC St 5-4. Wake Forest has a killer lineup. I watched some of the game on the ACCN.

Not much D1 baseball action last night so I took a peek at the WCC.

BYU (18-21) defeated Portland (22-18) by a score of 9-8.  It's going to be rough for BYU in Big 12 baseball next season.

Tulane 's was leading ECU 9-6 when the game was suspended because of lightning. It will be finished today in AAC action. BTW UTSA(CUSA), who is AAC bound next season, has made it to the top 25.

A couple of pigskin-like scores in D1baseball yesterday. CCU 15 South Bama 10 in Sunbelt action.

I rarely look at Horizon baseball, but Youngstown St beat N Kentucky 17-13. Andre Good went 4-5 with 3 HR and 4 RBI for the YSU Penguins.

Kind of surprised to UNC-Wilmington is on the bubble for D1 baseball tournament. Elon has slipped. CAAT starts May 24 with winner getting the one ticket.

Brutal day for the Herd: CCU 19 Marshall 1 then CCU 10 MU 9. ECU beat USF 7-1, Campbell beat USC-Upstate 12-9. Why is Oregon St(Pac12) playing Western Carolina(21-32 , 8-12 Southern Conference) a few days before conference tournaments? Oregon St 8 WCU 4.

Army and Penn are in the 64. Kinda funny that Rice(21-34), a one -time powerhouse, gets to host the CUSAT this season. CUSA shifted away from Biloxi as the host during Covid. I'll start a new blog as the conference tourneys kick into gear.
