Minor league baseball tales

 In the last two years I've been reading short books on the history of minor league baseball in the USA. I'm reading 

I came across some interesting first names:  

Judy Cline , a dude who hit a 457' homer out of Merchants Park in Denver, CO. His legal name was William Cline Jr

Ed (Bears Track) Green played in the Western Association.  While doing a deeper dig on this  the searchh engine kept taking to me Ed  Bearss, Chief Historian of the National Park Service.

So much information is not on the internet because it hasn't been entered into any data system.

Marty Marion, the Cards SS won 1944 NL MVP the award for the St. Louis Cardinals for mostly his  defense. He hit .267  with 6 HR , 63 rbi.

He played  his minor league baseball in Huntington, WV of the Middle Atlantic League, then a few seasons in the International League for Rochester,NY, before moving up to the Cards.

 In 2026 the NIU football team will join the MWC, while all other sports will move to the Horizon League.  They 're going out on a weak note , but perhaps they can get their second MAC win of the season at UMass(0-9, 0-5). NIU's only win is vs Ball St.

 Chavon Wright and Telly Johnson Jr. combo will do enough rushing the ball to give NIU a road W tomorrow night at UMass.

SDSU is right there with BSU in the MWC standings. LUcky Sutton will have another solid rushing game for the Aztecs. SDSU 24 FRES 17

 Battle of the I-10 rivalry of two current CUSA teams , UTEP and NMSU. Last season UTEP rallied for a 42-35 W at Las Cruces.  UTEP holds the series lead at 59–38–2.

UTEP moves to the MWC in 2026 so the frequency of the matchup may be staggered.

UTEP hosts the Aggies on 11/22/25

Rumors of Ohio U being courted by the SBC and CUSA. Will the Battle of the Bricks be affected?

La Tech holds a 48–33–6 lead in the series with ULL(SW LA) that started in 1910.  They played nearly every year from 1924 to 2000. It stopped when the Bulldogs' transitioned to the WAC and the Ragin' Cajuns' to the Sun Belt Conference. They have met four times since then and are scheduled for H&H series (2026, 2029).

Another divorce takes effect in 2026. WyomingMWC)–Colorado State(PAC12)

Colorado State leads the Border War with Wyoming 60-51-5 .First Meeting was Nov. 30, 1899

 They play for Bronze Boot, which was established in 1968 from the boot worn in Vietnam by Dan Romero, a CSU ROTC instructor.

They play this season on August 30 then the series will resume in 2028, with games scheduled through 2035. The two-year gap in the series (2026 and 2027) is due to both teams not having open  non-conference slots in those years.

Terp guy blogging:. When I was much younger, South Carolina's exit(1971)  and GT's hoops entrance(1979)  to the ACC irked me. Now, I'm noticing the former PAC12 teams , Stanford and Cal, and former  AAC team SMU, creeping up in the basketball standings. 

SMU beat NCSU, Stanford beat NCSU, and CAL trounced MIA yesterday. S. Yiğitoğlu scored 20 for the Mustangs.GT football joined the ACC in 1983.

Pat Kelsey left COFC for Louisville(2024-) and has had some success this season. Chris Mack ,his replacement at COFC,  took the Cards(2018-22) to one Dance, but is doing well at (14-4, 2nd in CAA) this season. COFC(2024-) edged Northeastern  last night.

WCC gets more interesting:  Santa Clara gets into the race with a 103-99 win over the Zags. San Fran beat Oregon State. First place SMC (6-0) beat PEPP.

SBC: First place Jags survived to edge Troy 64-63. Tale of two halves. Troy scored 22 in the first half and USA scored 22 in the second half.

It's been a few years since Cal State Bakersfield (9-10-8th in Big West) left the WAC in 2020. Rod Barnes is in his 14th season as the HC. J.Jones (29 pts) did his best for CSB in a 81-70 loss to Hawaii(12-6), 5th in Big West) .

Last Dance appearance was in 2006.

Akron and MOH are tied at 6-0 atop the MAC.  Zips blew out Buffalo and Redhawks beat BGSU last night.

GMU beat the Bonnies to stay a half game ahead of VCU in the A10.

Mestemaker had a solid game in his first start at QB  for NTX, and his 70yd TD run  got them within two points of TX St late in the game but the Bobcats held on for a 30-28 win.

NIU is leaving the MAC for the MWC for football only in 2026. No decision on the rest of its programs. They were in the Big West from 1993 to 1995.

Correct on Buffalo. Flames were down from the jump. Bulls look like a team that's on the rise in the MAC. Henderson rushed for 119 yards for BUFF.

Tre Lamb (ETSU) is the new Tulsa HC. Tough gig, low NIL funds.
